OMG!!! Never do these in front of kids!

Children learn the most by imitation and learning from what they see at home. So it is imperative that what we preach and what we do in front of them should not be contradictory.  There are quite a few things that a child learns from her/his parents; following 5 are rather common and important.

Disrespecting the partner

It is a big time No-No that either partner be disrespected or yelled at especially in front of the child. It is NOT ok that the child learns that it is alright to dishonour that parent just because the other parent is doing so.

Children need to understand that happiness is the default temperament and anger, sadness and other negative emotions are alright but they pass and happiness/calmness remains. To teach that lesson, parents need to stay calm and happy.

This is anyways a never-to-happen thing at home, but one should be extra careful if there is a child at home. A child should not see either parent being beat up by the other. They must learn from childhood that beating up each other is not the answer. It is seen that children from homes with domestic violence usually become bullies and hurt other kids in their surroundings may even be for fun sake.

Not following through your words

Words are the most important weapon a parent has for his children while chiding. So for the child to take her/his parent seriously the threats must be followed through. For example, if you are threatening to take away TV time privileges if room is not cleaned within the next hour, then that has to be done if the room is not cleaned.

Lying

Children learn both good and bad from people at home. So if you lie through your teeth to avoid a situation or get something, the child learns that. So in future if your child is fibbing tales to get away from a punishment, you should know it is your fault.
