Why I Like “Chick-Lits” and You Should Give Them A Chance Too…
I am a middle aged working woman who has no dearth of work at home either. So you may say “me-time” is kind of a luxury for me. That too the possibility of a giant “me-time” is restricted to my all girls’ vacations only. To top that, I love reading. Albeit fiction work mostly, but I love reading. Needless to say, a lot of time goes there too. I like to get lost in a number of genre like the classics, mystery, mythological fiction, history, horror, fantasy etc. They however, take a lot of time and concentration to read and take at least a day or two to finish them from cover to cover.
Back when I was in college, I was never fond of the “Chick Lit” genre, because I thought they were shallow. (I was really hopeful of the world back then). However, now with age and amidst all tensions and tribulations of daily life, there are many a time when sitting with a simple chick-lit, a mug of coffee and perfect silence makes all the difference in the world.
I mean obviously I understand the basic underline of the Chick lit world — the female protagonist’s inability or difficulty in finding Mr. Right who “likes you just the way you are”. However, there is a certain amount of hedonistic pleasure in reading about an imperfect girl looking for Mr. Right and getting one at the end of the book. Also Mr. Rights are described in a way that leaves a lot of room for suggestion in my head. So that helps too!!! Plus the books are not loaded with facts so one can breeze through them and read it as light-reading.
Some International “Chick-Lit” Authors Whom I’ve Read and Liked
Helen Fielding
Meg Cabot
Cecelia Ahern
Nicolas Sparks
Also these are some by Indian authors which were rather nice and lovely to read…
Those Pricey Thakur Girls – Anuja Chauhan
Losing my virginity and other dumb ideas – Madhuri Banerjee
How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life – Kaavya Viswanathan
An Offer She Can’T Refuse – Shoma Narayanan
Done With Men – Shuchi Singh Kalra
There are times, when my brain needs just enough juice to keep the imagination running wild and this genre helps with that. I reckon that every person should at least give this genre a try or two. If you are a serious reader, may be use one of the ‘chick-lits’ as a breather between 2 serious books. If you do not have the patience to read a big fat book, you can read such novella which is filled with love, romance, pleasure and some reality checks too (at times).
