Recently I met some high school kids who were generally pleased with themselves for being kewl and osom. No, you read it correct, kewl and osom! My grandparents used to write ‘alright’, while my parents wrote ‘okay’ and I’ve come down to ‘ok’. When I see the next generation writing ‘k’, I wonder what will happen to the generation after that! They will probably stop replying altogether.
Understandably, everything changes with time and so will the English language. However, like many other things this is going downhill. ‘Should’ & ‘would’ have become ‘shud’ and ‘wud’, while ‘You’ has become ‘U’! The other day, I happen to see a card that some students had given to my mother (a Teacher by profession). They had written ‘We will miss eww Ma’am’! When I say that they did not mean bad, it is true, because they truly miss her now that she is retired.
Seriously how much time does it take to write ‘school’ or ‘like’ that the kids have to shorten it to ‘skul’ and ‘lyk’? The difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ & ‘its’and ‘it’s is becoming obsolete whereas words like ‘literally’ and ‘basically’ have lost their true sense.
You might think that this is happening with kids from the state boards as English might not be their strong suit, but then my dear friends, you would be wrong!!! This is an infectious disease that is mostly prevalent among kids from good English medium schools, while the state boards are not far behind.
Changing with time and according to the trend is mandatory I guess, but hopefully not at the cost of a cold blooded murder of the English tongue!
