Love Thy Neighbour… or Not!
As a senior citizen and staying alone my mom is dependent upon our neighbours for all her emergency services. This time she was in serious need of those services and our next door neighbours did more than enough for her until I reached there. Those people have been nothing but angels when it came to helping us out.
After a gruelling 48 hours at the health care center, the prodigal mommy returns home as pale as a vampire and weak as a twig. As I help my mom recuperate after the episode, half of my time is getting eaten up by neighbours who are visiting us like clockwork. Most of them have 2 agendas:
1. To let me know how mommy is suffering from loneliness (which is incorrect because she chooses to stay alone to enjoy her freedom) and to give me a piece of their mind that I am being careless with her life because of my selfishness.
2. To actually check on her well being.
After a careful and silent observation of these type of people I realized I could divide them into categories for your benefit. Check for these categories and see if you know any of the below mentioned type of people in your life:
- The well wishers – people belonging to this category do care about her and it pained them to see my mommy so pale and unwell. They came to check how she was doing and hoped that she gets well soon.
- The all-important-village-idiots — these are the most annoying kinds. The fact that they were not informed about the hospital visit were taken personally. Apparently mom while passing out should have called these neighbours and invited them to the hospital party. Mommy was rebuked vehemently for not doing so.
- The gossip mongers – these ladies tag along with the well-wishers or the all-important-village-idiots to observe the situation and get juice for the next gossip sessions with their friends.
- I don’t-know-what’s-happening-around-me-I-am-so-lost-in-my-own-world neighbours – obviously I did not see these guys at my place. I wouldn’t blame them even wee bit because I am that kind of neighbour to my building residents.
Love them or hate them, we all have neighbours. Sometimes they come to our rescue and many a times we need to be rescued from them. We would love to hear your interesting interactions with your neighbours too!

Neighbours can be very irritating but some of them are nice too. By God’s grace my neighbours are very nice people.
