Deciding upon a preschool for your child is as important as finding a school, a day care or a pediatrician for him/her.  You would invest a lot of time and energy researching and making the right decision. Usually words-of-mouth, local parenting magazines, parental referrals and internet plays an important role in your decision.

  1. Narrowing your search and research may depend on the following pointers
  • Affiliation
  • Proximity to your home/work/day care
  • Past performance of the school
  • School’s philosophy on educating toddlers
  • School policies on complements and reprimands in the time of need
  • School’s general reputation
  • Teachers’ qualification
  • Teacher to student ratio (the lesser the better)
  • Clear cut rules and regulations so that the parents know what to expect from school and curriculum.
  • Budget
  1. Once a short list is made, schedule visits to these schools to observe the teachers with children & infrastructure. At this stage you can ask for some parental referrals. Only once you believe that the environment is safe and secure for your child, can you proceed to the next step or that particular school gets removed from your list.
  2. Third stage would be to get your child to the school to see how he/she reacts to this particular environment.

Only once you have done your complete homework and are satisfied with the answers received for all your questions, can you decide which preschool to select. It is imperative because this is the first place where your child will interact with complete strangers. So he/she needs to have the best possible environment for the same.
