Uncluttered home is a spiritual experience!

Ok maybe the title is a bit of a stretch but believe me when I say once you uncluttered the house, you uncluttered your soul. We moved recently and as my life was as busy as always before we shifted I couldn’t sort the things I wanted to carry to the new house. When the packers arrived they packed everything as it was at my old house to the new. When I started unpacking in the new house I realized though smaller my old house held so much stuff in its efficient storage spaces.

I made up my mind to throw away anything that is not required or not used immediately as I unpack. Once I started doing that I realized how much I had that I never used or had outlived its life and I had still stored it in some deep crevice of the house. I do however routinely clean out the closet, but I realized what I do isn’t enough and as soon as a garment has lived its life we need to get rid of it. There are times when you just don’t wear something because you have worn it too many times but the threads are intact and it pains to throw this item. Discard it anyways!!

Right from plastic containers to glass jars I have cleared out my house of everything not needed. I had stored kiddos old toys in hope of giving it away one day, but they just kept on piling up. I asked the house help if she wanted them and luckily she has a small baby at home, so off went all of kiddos infant to toddler time toys including some clothes. Although most of his clothes get recycled as he is the older cousin of the pack.

I got rid of old socks, wrapping papers, chits and bills, visiting cards and plastic spoons. Old bags that I would never use, membership cards that had expired, I have also decided to keep only utility and card bills up to past one year, although I have opted for on line versions of most now, go paperless. Less paper less clutter; being a busy working mother most of the items quickly go in a box and into a storage unit, the time to sit and sort through things is rare, in my case it was nonexistent. But better late than never!!!

I wonder why we keep storing items although some of them have outlived their existence. I did. And this was 10 years’ worth of clutter from my old house. Since we hadn’t moved in the last decade, maybe why the cleaning didn’t happen as a natural process.

Also I believe traditionally Diwali cleaning wasn’t just about cleaning the house but ridding off all the unwanted or unnecessary stuffs in the process. I had it wrong all these years. So why wait for Diwali, take out some time, one room at a time and start clearing your house. It not only opens space but also opens your soul. Truthfully!

PS: I couldn’t get rid of the books, though tried carrying them to a nearby library, but I just can’t let go of them. I guess everyone has some weakness.
