6th Sept 2018 is a day of Historic value. Thanks to these 5 Supreme Court Judges who emerged as our heroes without capes, and decriminalized homosexuality.

Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishra, Justice R F Nariman, Justice A M Khanwilkar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Indu Malhotra

The battle was won with the help of many individuals and activists who risked their lives, occupation and social status to fight tooth and nail for this abolishment.  However, this was just the first step of many to win the actual war against hatred and homophobia.

The basic idea of the existence of such a law in the first place is ludicrous. Before the arrival of East India Company and the entire enslavement of the country by the Brits, we Indians had happily accepted the spectrum of sexual orientation that existed. Itihaas gawah hai! Literally, just visit the ruins of Ajanta and Ellora caves and you shall see. Our scriptures, historical books all mention various levels of sexual freedom and expression. It was only post- colonization that the added notion of “homosexuality = not good” began. And now some self-proclaimed custodians of Hindutva are spreading incorrect information that does not appreciate homosexuality.

Even though the judgment has been passed and happiness prevails in the country, there are people who are spewing venom by using derogatory remarks and abuse on the social media.  There are more blocks on the road to achieving complete Pride. Some of them that I can think of my head are

  • Depicting homosexual characters in mainstream Bollywood movies with more dignity
  • Religious groups accepting this change with open arms and minds
  • Teaching the children from the beginning (both at home and school) that being different is not bad and no one should be bullied for that (or anything else)

In conclusion, this is a good change, and one of many that should happen eventually. Let’s raise our glasses and enjoy the win.
