Happy Friendship Day!!!!!

Today is a day of celebration. A day dedicated to all friends everywhere. Whether you are a childhood friend or a college friend, or an office friend or even a building friend. If you are a friend to someone or have a friend, this day is for you… so enjoy!!!

We all love our friends and the thought of a day being completely dedicated to them is a cause of jubilation. But do you know how and when people started celebrating Friendship Day? Well… here it goes.

The Origin Story

This day has been celebrated since long. Joyce Hall, founder of Hallmark cards, coined this date, and people exchanged cards to mark this special day. Eventually it came into the light that this day was nothing but a ploy to increase consumerism by buying Hallmark’s cards.

On 27 April 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 30 July as official International Friendship Day. Different countries celebrate this day on different dates. Every year, on the first Sunday of August, India, Nepal and many other countries come together to celebrate this day with their BFFs.

Winnie – The Pooh became the Global Ambassador of Friendship Day in 1998, when Nane Annan, the wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, declared so.

Be it the rise of consumerism or anything else, we Indians have been celebrating this day with vigour since long. Colourful bands were made either at home or procured from the store. We would wait eagerly for this day to come so that we could tie those bands on our friends’ wrists. Popular kids of school even had competition during this day and Rose Day to see who got more bands or roses. This vigour of celebrating Friendship Day became even bigger since the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) showed the importance of Friendship Day in college.

Whatever, the reason may be, it is a good day to catch up with friends and have a relaxed time, sharing experiences. So, wishing you all a very Happy Friendship Day people!!!! Hope you are having a jolly time with your BFFs.
